In a hotel somewhere on the east coast a man overhears the voice of another man singing. It is some of the most beautiful music he has ever heard. The man singing is not me; neither is the man listening to the music. But this fragment of song overheard completely by chance would be the beginning of a long musical journey, that would take me across the country and back again.

When I got the phone call I was living on a borrowed boat, working at a diner/bar in Seattle and temporarily separated from my family due to an inability to find affordable housing. Life has always been uncertain but that was pretty next level. My wife and three year old daughter had moved back in with her folks all the way across the country because we couldn’t find a good place to live and I couldn’t lose my job while looking for a place. Everything was up in the air. Then I got the phone call. It was from musician and friend Daniel Levi Goans. There was a rare opportunity—I needed to be in Virginia in a week and ready to record my songs. Before I knew it I was on a plane, then driving through rolling hills of hay bales in the Virginia countryside towards White Star Sound studios. I felt totally unprepared. It was one of the most exciting and frightening things I’ve ever done.

to be continued…
